COMMISSION DETAILS

Commissions are available in pastels, oils, charcoal and chalk, watercolours or bitumen (the sepia toned of my works.)
Oils would have to be my primary choice of medium as they offer the most control and hence guarantee the best result.

I charge no more for a mid sized piece than for a smaller one, and would recommend the former choice.
My works are all executed with materials of the highest quality, and will not degrade over time. They will last for centuries, in any of the above media.
In a commission involving more than one human figure, I charge $500 for each extra individual.
To begin, I require a 20% deposit.
I personally guarantee that the work will be beautifully crafted, and that the execution will be equal to, or exceed, any of the works within this page (for continued details scroll down.)

THE PROCESS:

I try and make the actualization of an image as painless as possible for my clientele. If at all possible, I prefer to meet the subject, and to take photographs myself. I like to get some understanding of the person I am to paint – their favourite things and where their passions lie.
Most people are very nervous, at first, but it is NOT AS SCARY AS IT SOUNDS.
Though I am adept at painting directly from life, the time required to execute the finished works that I produce usually makes this impractical. I have some developed some small skill in photography as a result (and from making manifest the ideas that swarm through my head.)
If the piece is to be a gift, a surprise, or if the person is not available, I can work from photos that have been taken previously. If this is the only option, I will happily do so, however, I would strongly recommend against this as a course of action. Family snapshots have their own beauty, but allowing me as much freedom as possible in this matter is undeniably better – this is what I DO.

I also make available all photography from the shoot, and burn a disc for my clients as part of the commission. Though the cost entire will sometimes be less than that of a portrait photographer, the photos that I take often exceed the abilities of those trained professionals.

FRAMING:

The professional framer that I use for the rest of my work, Ben Sherar is most excellent – he is a fellow artist and kindred spirit. His paintings may be seen at www.bensherar.com.
He does not maintain a shop-front as a framer, and hence his overhead costs are low and this is reflected in his pricing. It would be difficult to find a cheaper alternative. Both Ben and myself are happy to consult over framing.
