| The very first in my burning boat series and an early professional sale, this piece gave me the confidence to begin to open up and be really inventive - in a way that had little or nothing to do with contemporary art but a lot to do with me. The figures and everything else, actually, are all invented, and I realised I was able to produce good works without the necessity of models or imagery. I should have known really, I have been reading comics from a very early age and that is what they do after all. I was pretty happy with the fire on the boat :) when you have never done it before and it works, it can be particularly satisfying. Since then as you have probably noticed the motif has recurred in my work many time. It works for me particularly well because it represents both light and dark: The colour is bright and stands out as blue and orange are opposites in the spectrum, but it is inherently dark because it reperesents a FUNERAL. All of my work is about that balance, that weight between light and dark, as is much of my life. And the world for that matter.
