I originally painted this with the model (Karen, who has subsequently disappeared and lost her mobile or something) lying on TRAIN TRACKS. Which really made sense to me and fits with my general theme of comfort and peace found in the unlikeliest of places. I've used this many times, in works all over the page.

However. It was pointed out to me that a person lying prone on railroad tracks really, really looked like they were trying to commit suicide. Which wasn't the point at all. And this was after I had already painted some truly awesome tracks - I thought they were all shiny and reflective and groovy.

Here, this is a shot of the piece just before the hundred or so person commented about her suicidal intentions (for some reason the foreground is cropped out sorry) -

Anyhoo I caved. I painted the tracks out, and turned them into a road, obviously. Which does sort of have the same problem, but nowhere near as much. The surface is really quite rough and textured, I hacked at it with a few things.  It took me a long time to paint.
